Educating Our Community
Seva Food Bank is committed to more than providing food.
As a community-focused non-profit organization, our education initiatives empower individuals and communities by addressing the root causes of hunger, poverty, and food insecurity.
We strive to create a society where every individual’s dignity and potential are recognized and nurtured.
We accomplish this through our education programs, which are designed to improve food security and promote self-reliance among low-income families in the Peel region.
With your support of our education initiatives, we deliver on our core mission through these key values: optimism, selfless service, diversity and inclusion, transparency and accountability, ensuring the well-being of all, and a client-centric, community-informed operating model.
Seniors Workshops: Cooking and Connecting
Our Seniors Workshops provide more than just culinary skills—they create a space for vulnerable seniors to connect, learn, and thrive. These workshops, held in our commercial Teaching Kitchens, allow seniors to develop new cooking skills, improve their health, and foster social inclusion. Here’s what your support of our seniors workshops provides:
Culinary Skills: Taught by an experienced Culinary Instructor, seniors learn to prepare healthy, culturally-appropriate meals.
Health Education: Some of Seva’s workshops are led by registered dietitians with a variety of health topics, such as combating diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
Social Connection: Participants cook together and share a meal, building a sense of community.
Youth Workshops: Building Skills for the Future
Our Youth Workshops address the unique challenges faced by young people. These workshops teach essential cooking skills while promoting positive mental health, social inclusion, and employability. Here’s what your support of our youth programming provides:
Culinary Training: Youth learn knife skills, basic kitchen safety, and how to prepare quick, healthy, and budget-friendly meals.
Job Skills: Participants can use these skills for employment opportunities in the culinary field or to improve their current job prospects.
Mental Health: The workshops provide a safe, judgment-free environment that promotes social inclusion and positive mental health.
Culinary Training for Newcomers: Navigating Life in Canada
Our Culinary Training for Newcomers program is designed to help newcomers to Canada learn new culinary skills, gain employment readiness training, and acclimate to their new life in Canada and enter the Canadian job market. Your generous support will enable newcomers in the community to have access to:
Culinary Skills Training: We teach participants the skills they need to work in a commercial kitchen, such as knife skills, food theory, and different recipes.
Employment Readiness: Participants will gain the knowledge and methodology they need to search for employment and enter the Canadian job market.
Referral Support: We connect newcomers with organizations that can help them with further job training and other employment services, as well as with additional services they need.
Help Seva Keep Up With Demand
Why Your Donation Matters Now.
Our community is facing a growing hunger crisis. Economic challenges, rising food costs, and a lack of affordable housing are pushing more families into food insecurity than ever before.
In 2023, Seva distributed nearly 2 million pounds of food – but demand continues to outpace our resources. Many of our neighbours can’t afford fresh, nutritious food without our help.
Through our Dollars for Pounds campaign, your donation provides real food to real people in need. Every dollar makes a difference – help us nourish more families and build a stronger, healthier community.
